Pro-Palestinian protests escalated on Saturday as police arrested demonstrators at the University of Virginia and cleared an encampment. Tensions rose at UVA’s campus in Charlottesville when police officers in riot gear dispersed the protesters. Similar demonstrations have been taking place at universities across the US, with students rallying against the Israeli offensive in Gaza and calling for divestment from companies that support Israel’s government. In Chicago, dozens of people were arrested outside the Art Institute for criminal trespass, while in Ann Arbor, pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted a commencement ceremony at the University of Michigan. Contrasting views on Israel’s war in Gaza have resulted in protests at multiple campuses.
